Krystal Jung was born Chrystal Soo Jung in San Francisco, to a family that had left South Korea in the 1980s, and holds both American and South Korean citizenship.

She was five when SM Entertainment spotted her and her older sister Jessica on a family trip to Korea in 2000, which led to a cameo in Shinhwa's "Wedding March" video. The agency offered both sisters training; their parents thought Krystal too young and let only Jessica accept, and she went on to debut in Girls' Generation. Krystal began appearing in commercials from 2002, the first for Lotte alongside Han Ga In, and her parents relented in 2006. She trained for three years, appearing in music videos for Rain and, as the female lead, SHINee's "Juliette", before debuting in September 2009 as a member of f(x). She has also sung with the project group SM the Ballad.

Acting followed with More Charming by the Day (2010) and High Kick 3, then The Heirs (2013), where she played Lee Bo Na. She led My Lovely Girl (2014) and went on to Bride of the Water God and Prison Playbook (2017), Player (2018), Search (2020), Police University (2021) and Crazy Love (2022). Her films include More Than Family (2020), Sweet and Sour (2021) and Cobweb (2023).

She attended Korea Kent Foreign School and graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School in February 2013 with an achievement award, then read theatre at Sungkyunkwan University.
