Kim Shi Hoo was born Kim Young Joon in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, and began acting at fifteen in the 2003 KBS school series Sharp 1.

His early work was mostly in film. He played Geun Shik in Park Chan Wook's Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005), which brought him a Best New Actor nomination at the Grand Bell Awards the following year, and appeared in both The City of Violence and A Bloody Aria in 2006. He was the young Han Joon Ho in Sunny (2011), the same year he played Tsukamoto in My Way, and went on to Steel Cold Winter (2013) and Veteran (2015), returning as Detective Yoon when the latter was continued as I, the Executioner in 2024.

On television he took supporting roles in Formidable Rivals and The Secret of Coocoo Island in 2008 before Love Rain (2012), where he played Lee Dong Wook in the 1970s strand and Lee Sun Ho in the present-day one. Later credits include 12 Years Promise (2014), a special appearance in I Wanna Hear Your Song (2019), Apple of My Eye (2023) and Beauty and Mr. Romantic (2024).

He studied theatre and visual arts at Daejin University and visual media at the Korea National Open University, and signed with Hycon Entertainment in 2023.
